Two European countries will fund the redevelopment of Goroka Provincial Hospital in Eastern Highlands Province, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill has announced.
The redevelopment includes the construction of a new diagnostic and surgical centre which will be funded by loans from the governments of Austria and the Czech Republic. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said the National Executive Council has given approval for an Austrian company Vamed Group to redevelop the hospital. He said the redevelopment falls in line with the 2011-20 national health plan to improve service delivery within the health sector. "NEC has also directed the Treasurer to enter into appropriate detailed loan negotiations for the project. "Approval was also given for K10 million currently held in trust for Nonga Hospital to meet funding shortfalls of the project in 2018 with a view to replace the Nonga funds as part of the 2015 budget,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said. He said the Cabinet also directed Health Minister Michael Malabag to obtain a construction estimate from a registered quantity surveyor to assure value for money for the project, upon receipt of formal quotation for redevelopment of the Goroka Provincial Hospital from Vamed Group. The NEC further directed Mr Malabag to ensure a comprehensive contract is negotiated and forwarded to Cabinet for approval. He said NEC has also directed Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch to include an annual appropriation of K30 million for the project in annual budgets commencing in 2018 until the loan is paid back.
