Papua New Guinea flags will be lowered across the country and its diplomatic missions and embassies around the world starting today, as the country enters a national mourning period for the passing of its founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare. Prime Minister James Marape while conveying his heart-felt condolences this morning on the passing of the Grand Chief, has announced a 'national mourning period' for Sir Michael. ''Our Nation enters the mourning period, and he's appealed to citizens wherever they are to observe a 'week of silence, peace, and calm. "We pay respect to this one person whom our country owes much, he is unmatched by any one of us who comes after him. "Our nation honors this Great Leader, the founding and longest-serving Prime Minister of our country,'' said Marape.
''Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare deserves our unified respect now and forever into our future as a Nation. Prime Minister Marape announced that his cabinet will meet today to announce formal State funeral programs and PNG flags all over the country and missions abroad are to be lowered until we formally come out of mourning. The Prime Minister has conveyed his condolences to the family, tribe, and people of East Sepik for allowing this 'Giant of a Man' to be our national father.
