Illegal border related activities continue to pose a big challenge for the PNG Customs Service. But the organisation is now looking at ways to minimise these problem by first improving its capability. Customs Commissioner Ray Paul stated this during the opening of the Customs Mt. Hagen office this week, which had relocated from the AGC Building to Agilta Kona in Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands Province. He stated that Customs was addressing this challenge through positive stakeholder engagements, recruitment of more officers, training, better benefits and renumeration for officers and the implementation of the Customs Service Plan. The Commissioner said despite having less than the desired manpower and resources, he was pleased to note that officers were still performing beyond what was required of them. Apart from the office relocation and renovation, the Manager’s house was also renovated and a new vehicle was presented. The Commissioner stated that the developments at the Mt. Hagen Customs office, as well as in other parts of the country were all in line with the international obligation to modernising Customs processes because PNG Customs is a member of international organisations like the World Customs Organisation. The Commissioner challenged Mt. Hagen Customs officers to be mindful of the fact that the public knows that there is Customs presence in Mt. Hagen and that they should conduct themselves appropriately whilst on duty. He added that Customs officers should not chew betelnut inside the office or in the vehicle, and that the public should report any officer who failed to abide by this instruction. Chairman of the Customs Audit Committee John Dotson, also challenged the officers to be mindful and appreciative of been paid by the Government because he believed that Customs would become a very successful organisation in the future if it operated under visionary leadership, as is the case now. Pr. Max Zacheus, President of the Western Highlands Mission of Seventh Day Adventist church dedicated the new office.
