Papua New Guinea is confident of securing the Secretary General's post to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat as lobbying for the post gets underway between member countries.
Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill and Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato have held bilateral talks with several member countries to get the support for PNG's nominee Dame Meg Taylor. Mr O'Neill held discussion with Tonga, Samoa, Nauru and Niue among others soon after the plenary session of the 45th Pacific Islands Forum in Palau yesterday. PNG had twice asked for talks with the Solomon Islands however it did not turn out in it's favour. Officials from the PNG delegation are optimistic support for each candidate can be reached before decision is made when the leaders head-off into retreat today. The officials say they are working to secure the support of at least some more member countries to be comfortably confident of securing the Secretary General's post. Meantime, PNG's nominee Dame Meg Taylor told NBC News in Palau she is prepared to accept the outcome which ever way it goes down. Comments are closed.
