The long-delayed Papua New Guinea Chancery in the Solomon Islands has been completed and recently opened by Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill, who attended the Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders meeting in Honiara, took time out to open the new chancery building last Friday. The chancery was built at a cost of K10 million by PNG’s locally-owned, Lamana Development, after standing idle for almost a decade.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands have a very special relationship. "A relationship based on years of customary ties. Years of trust and, of course, diplomatic relationship established since PNG gained independence. "Today, we stand as a family to open a place that is going to better connect our two countries. We must continue to share ideas that will strengthen the living standards of our people," he said. He said the chancery is a place of diplomacy, business, education and cultural exchange, which is going to enhance our people-to-people relationship between PNG, SI, MSG and other Pacific partners. "As PNG continues to grow, we will continue to share information about the development of our key policies particularly in education, health-care, law and order and the ongoing infrastructure development taking place in PNG,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said. He said that is why PNG is increasing its diplomatic representation around the world. "The opening of the PNG chancery is just another one of those expansions of our diplomatic representation. "We must continue to strengthen the economies of our countries. PNG’s economy is now growing at around 9 per cent annually for the last 14 years. That will continue to grow over the next 10 to 14 years,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said.
