Several Catholic communities, including the Presentation Society of Australia and Papua New Guinea, have decided to pull investments from fossil fuel extraction.
The groups say the urgent need to stop all new fossil fuel infrastructure was highlighted by a recent report. The report found that the potential carbon emissions from the oil, gas and coal in currently operating fields and mines would increase the planet's temperature beyond 2°C by the end of this century. In a statement, they say major Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican organisations have come together since 1st September to observe the Season of Creation, calling on the 2.2 billion Christians world-wide to pray and take action to care for the Earth. They say up to date, nearly 600 institutions worth more than $US3.4 trillion dollars globally have announced divestment commitments.
