Papua New Guinea Police Commissioner David Manning has applauded two Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) cadet officers for their courage and professionalism after arresting a serving policeman caught taking a bribe. The arrest occurred at Badili Police Station on November 3, when the cadets intercepted an off-duty officer allegedly demanding money from the family of a man detained over a traffic incident. After the officer received the payment, the cadets swiftly detained him. Commissioner Manning said he was proud of the young officers’ conduct, describing it as a sign of hope for the future of policing in the country. “These two young Police Cadet Officers are exactly the kind of police that Papua New Guineans want on the frontline as we rebuild the RPNGC,” he said.
He highlighted that their decisive actions underscored the Constabulary’s commitment to fighting internal corruption and maintaining public trust. “Their action in standing up to corruption is a testament to their training and their character,” he said. According to Manning, the cadets’ response shows the effectiveness of the RPNGC’s ongoing training and leadership programs that instill discipline and ethical values among recruits. “The strength of character of our Police Cadets and the professional education they receive through our training program is ensuring that these young leaders are not tempted by corruption,” he said. The Internal Affairs Division investigated the matter, collecting evidence and witness accounts at Badili Police Station. The accused officer has been suspended pending formal charges and disciplinary review. “That was a job well done by these young policemen, and it bodes well for a bright future in the RPNGC for them both,” said Commissioner Manning.
