Local Businesses in Manus have benefited from an average of 489-thousand-Kina per week since November, as a result of the establishment of the Regional Processing Centre.
A fact sheet delivered by Australian High Commission representatives this morning, states that so far 10 Manus-based companies have benefited as a result of direct involvement. In addition 11 other PNG companies have benefited from an average of 431-thousand-Kina per week, for providing goods and services to the centre. Ken Douglas who is the head of the Offshore Detention and Returns Task Group also added that so far 680 Papua New Guineans are employed at the Regional Processing Centre with 580 being locals. Douglas also pointed out that the purpose of the media briefing is to ensure that there is transparency in activities taking place at the centre to inform the media and other stakeholders in opportunities that may arise and the benefits. He says the briefing this morning is the second and they intend to have it on a quarterly basis. Meantime work on the processing centre at East Lorengau is on target and is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
