Heart-break for Papua New Guinea last night, who missed out on a place at the World Twenty20 tournament.
The Barramundi’s made the perfect start to their winner takes all clash in Abu Dhabi, reducing Hong Kong to 19 for 4 before a 62 run stand between Babar Hayat and Mark Chapman helped them reach a competitive 137 for 9. Pipi Raho and Willie Gavera were again the pick of the bowler, taking three wickets each at less than a run a ball. PNG’s run chase started badly when Asad Vala was run out without scoring in the opening over. Tony Ura and Geraint Jones tried to anchor the chase but boundaries proved hard to come by as the required run-rate continued to climb. Charles Amini offered some late hope with a top score of 30 but wickets fell at regular intervals and PNG were all out for 108 in the final over. Hong Kong advance to next year’s World Cup in Bangladesh along with the Netherlands who beat Scotland. Afghanistan, Ireland, Nepal and the UAE are the other teams to qualify for the world tournament in Bangladesh in March. RNZI Comments are closed.
