This weekend shapes as a final chance for many players to force their way into contention for the Rugby League World Cup.
Papua New Guinea take on the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII in their annual clash in Kokopom tomorrow, with coaches Adrian Lam and Mal Meninga to announce their final 24-man World Cup squad on Monday. Sydney Roosters back Nene McDonald and Penrith hooker James Segeyaro will take part in the match, with local players making up the bulk of the team. The Australian team also has a number of World Cup hopefuls, with Cowboys centre Brent Tate and Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah among nine players with test match experience. It’s a first trip to PNG for Gold Coast Titans wing Kevin Gordon and he says his teammates have already briefed him on what to expect. “It’s their home ground and they love their footy over there so expecting it to be a tough game and they always go hard coming in with their heads and their shoulders as well, I’ve been told, so it’s going to be a nice tough game for us and probably be close with Mal Meninga coaching them as well.”Meanwhile the Samoa Residents team are also in action tomorrow in the first of two matches against the Australian Affiliated States.
