Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae has underscored the importance of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Chile strengthening their relations, which are founded on multilateralism and shared interests. Sir Bob made this statement after receiving the credentials of Chilean Ambassador Jaime Andres Chomali Garib at Government House in the National Capital District. Sir Bob highlighted that critical issues such as climate change, peace and security, and gender equality are top priorities for the Government, given their profound impact on the country, the region, and globally. "PNG, like many other countries in the region, is vulnerable to natural disasters resulting from climate change," Sir Bob said, referencing a recent landslide in Enga that resulted in significant loss of life. He added that the APEC Emergency Preparedness Working Group offers a platform for PNG and Chile to discuss and cooperate on these essential issues. Despite the geographical distance between PNG and Chile, Sir Bob noted the commonalities the two nations share, including their reliance on the ocean, involvement in agricultural commodities, and the extractive industries. He also acknowledged their collaborative efforts in various multilateral forums such as the United Nations, APEC, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
"In the international arena, both our countries aim to promote democratic principles and share a commitment to peaceful coexistence and security within our regions and the global community," Sir Bob said. He assured Ambassador Garib of the Government’s full support for his mission. Ambassador Garib emphasized that multilateralism is a key pillar of Chile’s foreign policy. "Challenges like climate change, peace and security, promotion of human rights, and gender equality require effective multilateralism that provides solutions to the current needs of states. Therefore, it is essential to promote multilateral cooperation while respecting the unique circumstances of each nation," he said. Garib expressed Chile's commitment to continuing its cooperation with PNG within APEC to advance the vision of an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful region. Also read Comments are closed.
