THE Prime Minister’s Office has received reports that PNG is a victim to ‘Financial Scheme’ terrorists.
According to a media release sent out on Friday, the PM’s Office has been made aware of the presence of fraudulent Agents and Marketing Representatives of International Media and Publishing Companies in the country. These Agents and Marketing Representatives are reportedly visiting Ministerial Offices, Departments, Government Statutory Bodies and State Owned Enterprises to solicit interviews and policy materials for publications. These supposed con-people posing as journalists, financial consultants and economists, front up to the various governmental institutions, make believable cases of wanting to publish information on the respective entity and have to this point succeeded in convincing the unsuspecting government entities into paying large sums of money for unnecessary and in many cases fraudulent international agencies. These publications have so far cost the State almost K2.6 million in the last 12 months. According the report, many International Media Organizations and Publishers are using Agents and Marketing Representatives to visit countries to lure unsuspecting Government Agencies and Officials into funding such schemes which are aimed at making easy money for their companies/proprietors. PNG has become the latest target for such people and already the State through various State Agencies has incurred close to K2.6 million in the last 12 months. There are reportedly Agents and Marketing Representative representing 14 International Media and Publishing Companies now operating in the country. Because of the lucrative nature of this commercial ventures, another group of Agents and Marketing Representative from 14 other questionable International Media and Publishing Companies are expected to arrive on our shores in the coming months. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is very concerned with the influx and activities of these Agents and Marketing Representatives who are prowling around the city of Port Moresby. The PM has therefore called an alert on all Government Agencies and Officials of the "activities" of these Agents and Marketing Representatives. “Refrain from making any financial commitments until proper verification and due diligence is carried out on the credentials of these people and organizations, they profess to represent,” said PM when giving his warning speech over the weekend. The PM’s Office has also advised that all Government Agencies including State owned Enterprises, (SOEs) contact the Office of the Chief Secretary for verification or approval if approached by any of these Agents and Marketing Representatives.
