Prime Minister Peter O’Neill announced the end to what he called the “Waigani remote-controlled government” of the past yesterday.
Upon his return from a two-day visit to Enga Province today, the PM said that he was pleased to see that most of the country’s provincial and rural service delivery was now being carried out at the district level. He congratulated all the members of parliament for a job well done adding that this was the way toward truly impacting their respective districts. “Since this government took office 16 months ago, one of its main aims was to eradicate the epidemic of running districts from Parliament in Port Moresby,” said the PM. He was glad to say that this disease like trend that had been plaguing the country is now a thing of the past with over 80% of the Members of parliament constantly in their respective districts at any one time throughout the year. Mr O’Neill furthered to state that the District Services Improvement Program (DSIP) and Provincial Services Improvement Program funds were now being received in the respective areas and that this allowed for a transparent and cooperative approach at service delivery between the government and the people. “We have put an end to the era of things being remote-controlled from Waigani. With your MPs receiving their DSIP and PSIP funds in the provinces, we have empowered the local councillor at the district level to be involved in the decision-making process of service delivery,” he said.
