PM Marape Looks Forward to Strengthening PNG-U.S. Ties under President-elect Trump

​Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on his re-election as the 47th President of the United States. In a statement issued last night, Prime Minister Marape extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the government and people of PNG, expressing optimism about further strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

“We look forward to reinforcing the longstanding partnership between our nations, grounded in shared values and mutual respect,” Marape stated, underscoring the importance of the relationship between the U.S. and PNG.

Prime Minister Marape also took the opportunity to thank outgoing President Joe Biden for his dedicated service, noting the significant contributions made during his tenure. “We thank President Biden for his commitment to fostering cooperation between the United States and Papua New Guinea, particularly in areas such as healthcare, security, and sustainable development,” he said.

In addition, Marape commended Vice President Kamala Harris for her pivotal role during the election campaign. He highlighted her resilience and historic contributions, particularly her impact on women and youth around the world. "Vice President Harris’s determination and strong leadership posed a commendable challenge in the election. Her efforts have inspired leaders, particularly women and youth, including those in Papua New Guinea,” Marape added. He also acknowledged Harris’s focus on critical issues in the Pacific, including climate resilience and women’s empowerment, which continue to resonate globally.

Reflecting on the cooperation between the United States and Papua New Guinea, Marape emphasized key achievements, including the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement in May 2023, which strengthened regional stability and security. He also highlighted the support from the U.S. in advancing PNG’s healthcare and infrastructure development goals.

“As we move into this new chapter, Papua New Guinea is committed to strengthening its relationship with the United States to pursue our shared goals of peace, prosperity, and sustainable growth within the Pacific region and beyond,” Prime Minister Marape concluded.
