Three men are in police custody, while another is at the Goroka hospital following a tribal fight at Hanganofi Station over the weekend.
Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent John Kale says the fight started among drunkards at a beer club, which then spilled over to the villages resulting in a tribal fight. “Police arrived at the scene and stopped the fight and arrested the perpetrators and they all have been charged for fighting,” says kale. No deaths were reported, but many were taken away with spear wounds. He is appealing to the villagers not to start the fight again. Meantime in another incident in Hela, government properties, including a police station are destroyed following a huge tribal fight at the Kopiago district station. According to Hela’s Provincial Police Commander, Mr. Mark Yangen, there’s nothing they can do about it at this time due to no form of transportation to the area. “The area is only accessible by air and at this time we have not gotten any response from the provincial administration regarding a plane charter to fly police officers into the area to access the situation,” says Yangen. Meantime, it is still not clear how many people are killed or injured in the fight.
