A RULING is expected to be made today on the jurisdiction of the court to hear the substantive matter in the case involving lawyer Paul Paraka who is facing fraud-related charges.
The charges are in relation to alleged payments made by the State to his private law firm. Paraka appeared at the Waigani Committal Court before Magistrate Mekeo Gauli who said he had to consult other magistrates before making a ruling on the jurisdiction of the court to hear the substantive matter. Gauli extended Paraka’s bail of K50,000 and will make a ruling on the matter today. Paraka was charged with money laundering, false pretence and conspiracy from April 24, 2007, to Nov 25, 2011. Lawyer Adam Ninkama advised the court that Paraka had first appeared on July 31 before Magistrate Cosmas Bidar. Ninkama said Bidar had directed them to Magistrate Pinnson Pindipia to sort out pending matters and notice of motions listed before Pindipia. Nikama said Pindipia had on July 31 directed to have the matters adjourned to August 28, including the fresh matter to allow police to explain why he (Pindipia) was interrogated by members of the fraud squad. He argued that it would be improper for the court to proceed with the arraignment yesterday because another court had already issued directions. The National Comments are closed.
