Papua New Guinea continues to grow strong, proving wrong many doomsayers, says Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion.
He made the observations when addressing the provincial administrator’s conference on the review of the Organic Law on Provincial and Local level Governments held in Port Moresby recently. Mr Dion, who is Inter-Government Relations Minister, said late academic Hank Nelson was one of the few who sensed that PNG had the confidence and ability to move forward. In his own words, which Mr Dion quoted: "In the long term, it is the people of Niugini who make one confident. They possess a courtesy, imagination and pragmatic strength to provide their own solutions.” Mr Dion said even though the pessimists have been proven wrong almost four decades later, the challenge remained the same and that was to endeavour to continue the process of nation building and strengthening of national identity. He said this was inherited through the diverse ethnicity, cultures and languages of the country as well as the rush to put together the state of PNG.
