The Papua New Guinea Opposition Members of Parliament are touring districts and towns in the country to raise awareness about the state of Papua New Guinea's economy, coinciding with Prime Minister James Marape and his cabinet ministers meeting in Kokopo this week. According to the Opposition, the weeklong tour in the Highlands region aims to inform citizens about significant national issues. The team, led by Alternate Prime Minister Rainbo Paita and supported by at least 16 Opposition MPs, began their tour in Ialibu-Pangia, Southern Highlands, on Tuesday with the inauguration of 50 police houses. At the event, host Governor William Powi stressed the importance of unity in politics. “In politics, leaders must become mature and work for the good of the people,” Powi said. He also acknowledged Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill for inviting him to the opening of the police houses at Ialibu and Pangia stations. O’Neill encouraged residents to take ownership of government properties and services, highlighting Paita's previous support for the accommodation project during his tenure as Planning Minister.
Paita emphasized that true leadership involves giving back to the community and addressing their needs. The Opposition team has reportedly visited Banz (Jiwaka), Kundiawa, and Chimbu. Salt-Nomane MP Francis Alua informed citizens about the country’s economic status and its negative impacts, while Paita offered young men and women hope for a brighter future. Also read
