The Opposition is demanding answers from the Government over the country's cash-flow situation.
In a statement today, Opposition Leader, Don Polye, says the Government must come out and explain why it's cutting back budget allocations to government departments and agencies, most notable 200 million Kina from the Health Department. There's also reported cut backs on Tuition Fee Free monies to schools as well as the delay in distributing the next batch of these funds, which is affecting schools in Morobe, West New Britain, East Sepik and East New Britain province. He says, the shortfall in funding for the National Development Bank of 160 million Kina is another worrying indicator. Mr Polye says there are questions surrounding the shutting down of the Ok Tedi Mine, as well as the National Petroleum Company and National Fisheries Authority paying dividends to the Government before the end of the financial year. He says, if there is a problem, then the Government must introduce a revised budget to correct the 2015 budget figures, before advising the country on belt tightening measures. Treasury Secretary, Dairi Vele, indicated the financial situation when recently explaining his absence from the country when a warrant of arrest was out for him two weeks ago. In a statement, he said he was attending several meetings overseas, which were crucial to the PNG economy. Mr Vele said, the meetings were related to raising much needed funds for the State.
