A NEW taskforce will be set up to investigate what has been described as an apparent collaboration between Oppo-sition Leader Belden Namah, rogue policemen and soldiers in an attempt to overthrow a legimate government.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said yesterday that the Task Force would be set up by Commissioner of Police Tom Kulunga to investigate the alleged collaboration between Mr Namah and some rogue policemen to obtain a warrant of arrest and a court order, outside of the normal lawful process. "A new task force will be set up and that’s up to the Police Commissioner, that is his responsibility, we have lodged a formal complaint in writing to the Police Commissioner that criminal investigations be conducted against Belden Namah and all those persons who are involved in some of these operations which are trying to destabilise a legitimate government, arrest leaders of government, including the judiciary and leaders of the executive government," Mr O’Neill said. He said for investigations against people holding high office, certain protocol should be accorded and the private use of policemen was not part of this lawful process. "It is an abuse tantamount to a criminal act." "I want to inform the nation that I have also instructed the police commissioner to investigate all parties including Belden Namah for his role, the way he goes about inducing and contacting policemen and women, contacting members of the Defence Force to try and meet his political agenda. "We are going to extend the investigation not only on these particular issues where police officers who are not responsible for files, running around trying to make arrests while investigations are going on. I know Belden Namah’s telephone lines are running hot, we are going to investigate all his numbers, persons that he has contacted in trying to influence them into discharging their duties that the State is paying them to do." Mr O’Neill said all investiga-tions would be conducted independently without political interference. "The interference of police investigations and of our courts by the Opposition Leader smacks of political desperation and amounts to a criminal act and his actions continues to harm the good image of our country," Mr O’Neill said.
