The National Government will be filing for a Judicial Review this week, into the Ombudsman Commission's directions for an independent investigation into the Executive Government's decisions.
Prime Minister Peter O' Neil made the government's intentions known, after meeting with Chief Ombudsman, Rigo Lua, and his officers last Thursday. Mr. O' Neil says the government believes the Commission has exceeded its constitutional responsibilities, as these directions are NOT in the best interest of the country. He says, the government supports the independent investigations undertaken by the Commission into its decisions, including that of the controversial 3-billion-Kina UBS loan. These directions include the freezing of the interest payments on the U-B-S loan as part of its investigations. However, Prime Minister O' Neil says these investigations should NOT impede the work of the Executive Government or go against the nation's overall interest. He says such a freeze would trigger a default which could have disastrous consequences for P-N-G, including the loss of all the Oil Search Shares and gains made in the rise of the share price.
