Oil Search is the latest company to show support for November’s BSP PNG Games, coming on board as an official ‘Konsel’ sponsor.
Considered Papua New Guinea’s largest oil producer, Oil Search is an oil and gas exploration and development company that has been operating in PNG since 1929. While the company’s main growth asset is its 29% interest in the PNG LNG Project, it also holds an extensive spread of oil and gas production and exploration licenses across the country. Taking place on Lae’s own home soil from 16th – 29th November, the BSP PNG Games will see over 9,000 participants from more than 22 provinces gather for two weeks of competitive sports. The Host Organising Committee (HOC) has welcomed Oil Search’s support, which will assist the committee in putting on what’s to be the biggest sporting event Papua New Guinea has seen since the 1991 Pacific Games. “We are thrilled with the support that Oil Search has offered as a Konsel sponsor, which will allow us to implement a range of new activity this year. Improved infrastructure, updated facilities and better adjudication of each sporting code are just some of the things that we will be to introduce with the nearly three million Kina we have received from corporate sponsorships for November’s Games,” says Materua Tamarua, BSP PNG Games CEO. “Oil Search is a home grown PNG company, and are happy to be part of this exciting sporting event,’’ Executive General Manager for External Affairs and Sustainability Gerea Aopi says. “Oil Search is involved in a number of major community programmes and we are thrilled that we can give back to the community through the nation’s biggest ‘grassroots’ event – the PNG Games. The work the committee has put into creating a world-class event here in Lae is phenomenal and we can’t wait to see it all unfold this November,” Aopi says. He said one of the other major community projects Oil Search is currently developing is the National Football Stadium, formerly the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby, which is being developed as a tax credit project for the government. The BSP PNG Games will kick off in Lae with an opening ceremony at the Sir Ignatius Stadium on Sunday the 16th November. The ceremony will be televised live across the nation on EMTV and include performances by ARIA awarding winning artist Jessica Mauboy and PNG favourite Jokema
