Papua New Guinea Deputy Opposition Leader James Nomane has reiterated the call for the Marape-Rosso Government to refrain from interfering with the Central Bank. He emphasized that the bank’s governor, Elizabeth Genia, should be allowed to manage its operations independently. Speaking in Banz, Jiwaka, Chuave MP Nomane explained in simple terms the relationship between the operations of the Bank of Papua New Guinea and the broader economic situation. He highlighted the rising prices of basic food items as a significant concern. Nomane, accompanied by Opposition MPs led by Alternative Prime Minister Rainbo Paita, is on a weeklong tour of the Highlands to raise awareness of the country’s pressing issues. Bogia MP Robert Naguri underscored the need for a change in leadership, clarifying that the Opposition holds no personal grudge against the Government or Prime Minister James Marape.
"We are not trying to undermine the Government. Marape is a brother, but we are dissatisfied with how he’s running the country. We want to change the leadership, which is within our legal rights if we are not satisfied with the prime minister," said Naguri. Rainbo Paita highlighted the country’s significant challenges, including fuel shortages, foreign exchange rate issues, escalating law and order problems, and inflation. He stressed the importance of transparency, stating, "These issues cannot be hidden; people need to be aware of them." Hiri-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu emphasized the severe impact of inflation and urged citizens to speak with their leaders about joining the Opposition to initiate change. He proposed a strategy to improve citizens' livelihoods and restore the country by ensuring customary landowners hold titles to their land while adhering to the State's laws. Iduhu asserted that this initiative would significantly benefit rural communities. Also read Comments are closed.
