Port Moresby Police say, they are not aware of any request by West Papuan refugees and their supporters, to stage a protest against the Australian and PNG Immigration Departments, regarding the dumping of seven West Papua asylums in P-N-G, after fleeing halfway into Australia, from Merauke, Indonesia.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa told NBC News, police will not allow a protest in the capital city, saying it would be illegal. West Papuan refugees and their supporters told NBC News, they will stage simultaneous protests in Port Moresby and Melbourne, Australia, today. The group, among them a woman and 10-year-old boy, fled persecution in Merauke, for participating in the Freedom Flotilla to West Papua, last month. A member of the group claims, that following a meeting with Immigration officials yesterday, they have been given a week to decide, whether to be sent back to Indonesia, or stay seek asylum in PNG. The man also claims, a third option given them by Immigration authorities, is to be jailed in P-N-G, for illegal entry. Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato, has failed to release a statement on the issue, despite his department saying that he would. Comments are closed.
