Former New Zealand Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae has been appointed as the moderator for upcoming discussions on Bougainville's political future. The announcement was made by Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and Autonomous Region of Bougainville President Ishmael Toroama during a joint press conference recently. Sir Jerry, aged 69, will oversee unresolved issues concerning Bougainville’s future status. President Toroama expressed confidence in Sir Jerry’s ability to address the matters at hand, welcoming his involvement in the delicate talks. “We have various issues that arise in different contexts, and I believe Sir Jerry will help guide us toward a unified position,” said Toroama. “Together, we can embark on a mission that will achieve lasting results.” Prime Minister Marape extended his gratitude to the United Nations for its continued support in the Bougainville peace process. He also thanked development partners, particularly the Australian government, for their assistance throughout the negotiations.
“We appreciate Sir Jerry’s willingness to take on this important role, and we are grateful for the backing from our international partners as we work through this process,” Marape stated. Sir Jerry expressed his enthusiasm for the task ahead, stating that he felt honored to be part of such a significant initiative. “I am delighted to contribute in any way I can. It’s humbling to be chosen by both leaders to help guide this important dialogue,” he said. As an independent moderator, Sir Jerry will engage in discussions with all parties involved, aiming to find a common path forward for Bougainville. His extensive knowledge of Papua New Guinea and Bougainville positions him well to facilitate constructive dialogue. The United Nations will continue to provide technical and financial support to ensure the success of these discussions in the months to come. Also read Comments are closed.
