New Ireland leaders are determined to go ahead with the push for autonomy. The Provincial Government, headed by Governor Sir Julius Chan, has been planning this to happen after the country's 40 years of independence. Chairman of the New Ireland Provincial Autonomy Committee, Sir Noel Levi, and his deputy, former Premier Pedi Anis, say New Ireland is more than capable of looking after itself. They say after 40 years, the province is now ready to cross over to autonomy. They say relevant bills were drafted and submitted to Cabinet in 2012 but received no response. They say the time is now right for New Irelanders to plan their own destiny.
