Commissioner of Police Tom Kulunga, says the mobile squad from Mount Hagen is in Madang, to provide security during the by-election.
Mr. Kulunga says, the mobile squad will boost police manpower and ensure the by-election is conducted successfully. He said this, after returning to Port Moresby from Madang yesterday, following reports of destruction of ballot boxes, last week. Mr. Kulunga, told police officers and election officials, that they should strive to make the by-election a successful one, despite the negative events. Returning Officer for the Madang Open by-election, Adolf Duangha says, polling generally was conducted peacefully. Two affected Wards in the Madang Open by-election go to the polls again today. Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Trawen directed the Returning Officer, Adolf Duangha last week, to re-schedule polling for Wards Four and 26 in the Ambenob Local Level Government. His direction follows a spate of attacks by disgruntled supporters of certain candidates on polling officials and ballot boxes, on Wednesday afternoon. The attacks saw a ballot box and papers for Ward Four destroyed, which had also led to a petition by aggrieved candidates to the Electoral Commission. The Ward Four ballot box contained ballot papers from Kamba, Silibob and Mis villages, in the Ambenob L-L-G. Nine candidates met with the Returning Officer, Madang’s Provincial Election Manager, Cyril Retaw and Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Sylvester Kalaut, last Thursday and presented the petition. Mr Trawen says, his decision on the re- poll for Ward Four is because, the ballot papers were damaged, as most of them were exposed to the rain, at the time of the attack. Comments are closed.
