THE Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates has clarified that the defection of MPs from one party to another is not caused by the Registry. Dr Alphonse Gelu said the decision to defect to another party was made by the MPs themselves.
He said the issue was of concern to the Registry and it has since tried to address the matter.“The intention by MPs to change parties is a matter between the MP and their respective parties and the party that they intend to join,” Gelu said in a statement on Wednesday. “The Registry only facilitates the intentions of the MPs once they fully comply with the administrative process that is in place.”He said that in response Kantri Pati’s president Nelson Duwabane’s statements in the two dailies on Wednesday. “The updated list of the membership of parties in parliament is up-dated every month and is available for parties and other interested persons or groups to have access to at the Registry,” Gelu said. “Duwabane is a regular face around the office of the Registry and should have requested the updated list instead of going to the media to raise a matter that is minor.”In reference to the Kantri Pati’s case, Gelu said the party had two of its candidates elected into Parliament in the 2012 national elections – Lufa MP Jeffrey Kuave and Kerema MP Richard Mendani. He said last May, he received a letter from Kuave of his intention to resign from the Kantri Pati and join the People’s National Congress party. Comments are closed.
