Nine of the 11 passengers on- board a 23 footer dinghy powered by two 40hp motor engine that went missing last week while travelling from Manus to Madang were found and rescued in WNBP by Provincial Disaster Office with the Assistance of PNG Ports Kimbe last Friday.
. The boat and the passengers went missing on the 29th of December last year and were found and rescued on the 10th of January this year. WNB PPC Gordon Magum confirmed that the passengers were all young adults (3 women and 8 men). He said the 9 passengers are now stationed and are receiving treatment at the Provincial Disaster Office for infectious diseases that they might acquire while out at sea and the other two of the passengers swam off to Lambe Village in Vitu Island and were now staying at the St Michael Parish waiting to be brought to Kimbe. Meanwhile Acting Director for WNB Provincial Disaster Office Mr Leo Porikura said the Provincial Disaster Office is now organising transport to go to the Island to bring the two into Kimbe before assisting all of them to go to Madang. The Acting Director said the cause of their disappreance was due to the lack of fuel in the boat the Operator had also switched off their GPS tracking device until they realise they went off track. Mr Porikura said they tried to get back on track but they had used the amount of fuel that could have brought them safely to Madang. He also said the Provincial Disaster Officials were out searching for another boat from Bali Island that went missing when travelling to Kimbe when the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) gave information on that missing boat which leads them to the rescue. The missing boat which was travelling from Bali Island to Kimbe was a 19 footer dingy with a 40hp motor engine but it was over loaded when it bumped into rough seas between Bali Island and Vitu Island and the engine went off but they were lucky that they have many adults on board and they managed to paddled to Vitu Island for safety.
