Police in Port Moresby have arrested a key suspect in the six-million-Kina Maybank robbery and recovered over half-a-million-Kina, over the weekend.
In what was described as a breakthrough in investigations, police recovered a total of 586-thousand 200 Kina. Metropolitan Superintendent, Andy Bawa, said working on a tip off, police apprehended a prime suspect along the Hiritano Highway, who was in possession of 170-thousand Kina in cash. This then led police to Gerehu suburb, where some of the cash was stashed away. Police rounded up a resident at Gerehu stage two in the nations capital and found in the room of one of the house a metal box containing 459 thousand , 200 kina bundles in cash. That amount added with the 127 thousand kina recovered from the prime suspect along the Hiritano Highway adds up to a total of 586 thousand , 200 kina recovered so far. Police also recovered one of the two fire arms that were used during the robbery this morning at Tokarara surburb. Lae and Madang Police have also apprehended another suspect with 30 thousand kina in cash along the Lae Madang Highway. Superintendent Bawa is calling on the rest of the gang members to give themselves up to the police before the long arm of the law catches up with them, as their identities are known. So far, four prime suspects are now under police custody, as investigation continues. The six-million Kina was stolen from May Bank, when security guards escorting the money to the Bank of Papua New Guinea, turned on their escort Commander, taking he cash trunks in broad daylight, in Down Town Port Moresby.
