Marape Govt eyes Supplementary Budget amid COVID-19 spike

​The Government is anticipating a supplementary budget in the third quarter of this year.

Prime Minister James Marape said this is due to the contraction of the economy and drop in revenue collection.

He said COVID-19 has spun the Government's revenue focus out of proportion, affecting revenue collection by almost 20 percent seven months on in 2020.

Marape said when his Government took office last May, PNG was already at a high level of deficit, meaning the economy was not producing enough revenue against the need it had, on top of the accumulated debts.

''The Government will reprioritise expenditure in the anticipated supplementary budget, cutting back on expenditure, with non-key recurrent activities pushed back to next year and make savings,'' said Marape.
