The Marape-Rosso led government has approved a submission by the Ministry of Justice & Attorney General to restructure the High Court of PNG. The country's Justice Minister and Attorney General Pila Nininga has told media in Port Moresby today. The Attorney General described this as a historic reform to the country's legal and court system. Once the changes come into effect the National Court will become a three tier upper court system. The changes will allow the establishment of the Court of Appeal which will become the intermediate Court between the National and Supereme courts.
The NEC decision has no given the opportunity for DJAG to develop drafting instructions for a Bill to ammend section 155 of the constitution. Minister Niningi says the restructure will assist the Judiciary manage and reduce the the back log of cases for both civil and criminal matters.
