A Manus woman was allegedly raped by expatriates workers who were engaged in Australia's Asylum center on Manus Island. PNG leader of Government Business James Marape said a local woman was allegedly raped by expatriate workers on Manus.
“There was, as reported, a rape that took place in the processing centre and criminal activities being exposed out there,” Marape said. He said expatriate workers had been “rushed out of the country after committing offences that are criminal in nature”. “The Prime Minister has directed for an investigation into what has happened, and the circumstances that led to the rushed evacuation of those who purportedly were involved in those criminal activities.” He said the activities continued to paint a negative image of the country in overseas media. Marape said if Papua New Guineans could face the Australian judiciary system, “it is only fair that Australians taken out of this country be brought back to face issues of criminal nature in PNG”. He said Australian companies, which tried to protect their employees who broke the laws of this country, “should be terminated immediately forthwith from doing business in this country”. “They have no respect whatsoever for laws this country. They must not do business in this country.” Marape said the infrastructure had deteriorated on Manus, contrary to what was propagated when the Australians set up the processing centre.
