The Australian Government is providing additional support to Manus Province worth approximately $A26 million (K60.92m) on top of $A14 million (K32.80m) pre-existing aid.
These support funds will be used for a number of projects that will benefit the lives of the people of Manus Province. Ten schools selected by Manus provincial education division will be receiving infrastructure school kits: the construction of double classroom with an administration office, a teachers house and ablution block. This will double the pre-existing commitment of ten school kits to twenty. Furthermore, five Australian scholarships have been awarded to students since 2012 and will continue on with additional assistance. An education roadshow is due to take place in Manus in the coming weeks to help Manusians apply for tertiary opportunities in PNG and Australia. As part of its commitment to health, the Australian government is scheduled to complete delivery and installation of medical equipment at the Lorengau hospital by early March. Upgrading of the dental clinic has already been completed and it re-opened earlier this month. Staff housing was identified as an immediate priority when the health department and the Lorengau Hospital met to discuss further assistance. Since 2012 the Australian Government has given 16 emergency obstetric care medical kits, purchased and delivered medical supply kits to 61 aid posts and 13 clinics inside Manus Province and awarded 33 midwifery, nursing and community health work scholarships. Other programs to be funded by this additional support funds are: road maintenance and rehabilitation works, scheduled to be completed by December 2015, renovation of Lorengau Market, to be completed by the end of this year, and community grants. These grants for youth activities will support sports, income generation and livelihood opportunities for youths at risk, vulnerable women and children and communities adapting to climate change and they fall in line with Manus provincial youth policy.
