National flag carrier, Air Niugini, is looking at launching its direct flights to Japan, Guam and other Asian destinations up north, through Manus.
The airline's General Manager Commercial, Dominic Kaumu, says compared to other areas in the country, Manus, is strategically located, as it will cut down a lot on fuel costs. Mr. Kaumu made this known, when calling on the Provincial Government and local landowners, to organize themselves and restore their jet refuelling depot, at the Momote Airport. The refuelling depot went out of service more than a decade ago, and is yet to be restored. The Jet fuel which now cost the national airline, Air Niugini, a lot of money just travelling to Manus it has the supply depot set up at Momote will tremendously help boost the local economy beside saving cost. Mr Kaumu says every time the airline flies into the province, it carries extra fuel to make its return run often forcing the plane to offload five to ten passengers including cargoes to make up for the extra fuel weight. And with Air Niugini making direct flight from Port Moresby to Japan with hopes of opening up other north Asian destinations, Manus is the ideal location. He says the Japan run direct from Jacksons international airport carries about 15 passengers less to balance up the extra fuel it must carry to make that long journey. Mr. Kaumu says, Manus must make use of opportunities PNG's tuna industry is establishing with the Japanese market, or miss out to its N-G-I neighbours.
