MORE than 1000 Papua New Guineans are now employed to provide services at the Regional Processing Centre (RPC) on Manus.
According to the RPC economic opportunities fact sheet, as at July 15, the total number of PNG citizens employed is 1056 and 917 of these people are from Manus. Services at the Lombrum centre are delivered by Transfield Services and International Health and Medical Services (IHMS), with all service providers required to maximise the employment of PNG citizens wherever possible. The fact sheet also stated that an average 67 per cent of all service provider staff employed at the centre are PNG citizens. It stated that service providers have worked closely with locally engaged staff to build capacity and provide opportunities to develop skills including: first aid, advanced security training, incident response and leadership training for supervisory and management roles. It also stated that new facilities are under construction in East Lorengau and Lombrum, which will lead to further opportunities for employment of PNG citizens, including those from Manus. The fact sheet stated that currently 10 Manus companies have a direct business involvement providing goods and services to the RPC, with an average worth of K400,000 per week. In addition, another 15 PNG companies provide goods and services to the RPC, worth an average of around K2.1 million per week. The document also provided examples of companies providing goods and services to the RPC that include: Total Food Network Ltd, Islands Petroleum Limited, Interoil Products Limited, Panariu Building Maintenance, Spic N Span, Chauka Car Rentals, Agility Limited, Kingfisher Hire Cabs, Juromo Wholesale, Pest Care Limited, Island Fresh Product, Hipowa Lae Ltd, Manus Transport And Logistics, Air Niugini Ltd, Loda Security and Tactical Security International. It stated that in the area of investment in infrastructure, work is underway in Manus to expand and upgrade the Lombrum RPC, including associated infrastructure and permanent staff accommodation; and to construct accommodation at East Lorengau. Decmil Australia has been engaged as the managing contractor for these works and the engagement of local businesses and local employment will increase as subcontract and supplier packages are let by the managing contractor.
