A man was arrested and charged by NCD Police for demanding compensation in Port Moresby today. The accused John Tobias 38 of Imbongu Southern Highlands Province and his tribesmen allegedly demanded K500,000 from G4S Security company when one of their male relatives employed by the firm, passed away while on duty recently. The aggrieved relatives blamed the company for his death and allegedy threatened the company officials. The company refused to pay but offered K5,000 for funeral expenses, which was rejected and met with threats.
The Managing Director an Australian male expat offered K33,000 for funeral expenses which was initially accepted but the Southern Highlanders later demanded a further K11,000 which was refused. Unhappy with the threats and attempt to extort more money, the MD filed a police complaint and police swarmed the company premises and arrested several people including Tobias.
