Convicted former National Provident Fund Chairman, Jimmy Maladina, has paid back the two-million-650-thousand Kina he was found to have misappropriated.
He appeared at the Waigani National Court for submissions on sentencing today. Maladina was found guilty of misappropriating 2 million 650 thousand Kina by the same court in May. This relates to questionable deals made during the Construction of the NPF Tower now Deloittes in Down Town Port Moresby in 1998 and 1999. He was the then chairman. His lawyer Ian Molloy among other submissions say his client has repaid the money therefore a non-custodial sentence should be given. The State didn't give any specific penalty recommendation but urged the court to impose a penalty that must fit the crime. The court had found him guilty based on circumstantial evidence on what had transpired during that time, as the State couldn't provide hard evidence to prove the charges. A decision on penalty is expected in the first week of August. NBC/PNGFacts
