Madang Governor, Peter Yama, and his two wives were arrested yesterday in Madang in relation to the missing K6 million, belonging to the Manam Resettlement Authority. His second wife, Mary Simoi, was arrested in the morning and charged with conspiracy, stealing and money laundering. The third wife Velda Yama and Mr. Yama gave themselves into police at the Jomba Police Station later. They were accompanied to the police station on foot by a huge crowd of sympathisers, between 6:30 and 7 o'clock last night.
Governor Yama was slapped with five (5) charges - abuse of office, breach of the Public Finances Management Act, conspiracy to defraud, misappropriation and money laundering. Velda Yama was charged with conspiracy, false pretence, and money laundering. All three are out on police bail of K3 000 each and will appear for mention at the Madang District Court today. Meantime, Governor Yama and his wives remain innocent until proven guilty by the courts.
