The National Court in Waigani today, rejected an application by the Electoral Commission to extend the recount of ballot papers from the 2013 Madang Open by-election.
Returning Officer in charge of the judicial recount, Simon Sinai had asked for an extension to the 19th of September however, the court reject the application ordering instead that the recount be completed by the 5th of September which is Friday this week which results be return to court on the 12th of September. The recount which is now into its second week resumed after lunch today after it was suspended over the weekend when Mr. Duban's scruitneers walked out of the counting centre at the Jomba Parish YC Hall. The court further ordered that the recount continue with, or without Duban's scrutineers. So far, two candidates' primary votes have been counted, and those are ballot papers belonging to Stanley Pil and petitioner Peter Yama. Counting officials were starting on Bryan Krammer's first preferences when NBC News visited the counting centre this afternoon. Mr. Krammer was the first runner-up in last year's Madang Open by-election. Comments are closed.
