Morobe Governor Kelly Naru has expressed disappointment at the reduced funding of Local Level Governments in the 2015 National Budget.
In a statement, Governor Naru says, L-L-G's are the pillars of service delivery in rural districts, and cutting their budget is like "removing the life support system" from a patient. Mr. Naru says, Under the 2015 Budget presented by Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch on Tuesdsay, L-L-G funding has dropped from 500-thousand Kina to 100-thousand for each L-L-G's. Mr. Naru says L-L-G's are the true meaning of decentralization and service delivery, and the Government is making a terrible mistake. He says being the biggest province in terms of the number of districts and L-L-G's, Morobe contributes a hefty revenue to the National coffers, and the funding cut, makes him wonder where their taxes have gone. He's calling on Open Members in the province, to supplement the L-L-G Service Improvement Program funds, through their D-S-I-P - a move he's already starting, allocating over 13-million Kina of his Provincial Service Improvement Program money to supplement the L-L-G-S-I-P. The reduced funding means, the 33 L-L-G's in Morobe province, will receive 3-point-3 million Kina, compared to over 16-million in the last two years.
