Minister Elias Kapavore described the groundbreaking ceremony for the Level 5 Provincial Specialist Hospital in the National Capital District (NCD) as a significant step toward enhancing health services for the communities in the NCD, Central, and Gulf regions. This event marked one of Mr. Kapavore's first public appearances since assuming the health portfolio less than two weeks ago. At the ceremony, Minister Kapavore emphasized the importance of health as a fundamental right, stating that everyone should have access to essential health services. “This specialist hospital will offer crucial services such as radiology, cancer treatment, and pathology, with a total capacity of 200 beds. These services are critically needed in our communities,” he remarked. The Health Minister noted that the establishment of this new facility, situated within the Tete Settlement, will help alleviate overcrowding at the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH). “This development will allow PMGH to concentrate on its functions as the National Referral and Teaching Hospital, thereby improving its capacity and capabilities,” he explained.
Minister Kapavore expressed satisfaction at the securing of land for the hospital and the completion of the Provincial Health Services Plan. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in ensuring the hospital's success. “My department is ready to assist the National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCD PHA) Board in the construction of this hospital. Together, we can ensure that it meets community needs and adheres to the standards necessary for a well-functioning facility in Gerehu,” he stated. Ownership of the new Level 5 Hospital will rest with the NCDPHA, which is expected to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), to form a steering committee that will ensure compliance with National Health Service Standards.
