Landowners from project-impact areas in the country, have been identified as ‘high risk’ people, in the transmission of the HIV virus.
Recent revelations by the National AIDS Council disclosed, members of the discipline forces, sea farers, truckies, businessmen, public servants, mine workers and politicians at all levels of government were also in this same category. This group is being referred to as the Five-M’s, which stands for, Mobile Men with Mobile phones, Money and Multiple sex partners. Dr. Bun states, although not 100% guaranteed, the use of condoms at least provides some form of protection, adding, the N-A-C highly recommends it even though it's not compulsory. Findings by the Council revealed a lot of landowners, especially those from mining and logging areas, are using their royalty monies to lure or entice women, especially sex workers and young girls into having unprotected sex with them. The Council explained this trend is developing due to the large amount of money being paid to the landowners in royalties by the developers and the State. Meanwhile, the most- at- risk population includes female sex workers, gays and transgenders. Chairman of the National AIDS Council, Dr Banare Bun said the most- at- risk group is very minor but warned it can get worse if there are no control measures in place. Dr Bun had therefore emphasized the use of both the male and female condoms correctly and consistently to avoid the transmission of the virus. He adds, 96 per cent of the H-I-V infection rate in P-N-G is through sex, stressing that safety is important. Comments are closed.
