The Opposition is calling on the Police Commissioner Gary Baki to direct his police commander in Wewak, East Sepik, to release the students, who were verbally abused, assaulted and locked up for what police believe were conducting illegal awareness campaign. The former Attorney-General and Sinasina-Yonggamugl Kerenga Kua has queried whether the police commander and his men has arrested and locked them up in Wewak cell after properly checking and vetting process was done at Police Headquarters at Konedobu in Port Moresby. “In my village we see university students as high profile people so I query whether the police commissioner has got all these students in Wewak Cell properly checked and vetted down at Konedobu through the high profile committee, which has been set up when they were arrested. “Otherwise, this is one more proof that everything has been designed politically for political conveniences just to uphold one man. “That is what it is. The police are no longer independent and impartial. I might be wrong so prove it to me tomorrow,” said Mr Kua in a media conference today (Monday 30, May 2016). He has called on the police to release these kids and consequently disband the vetting committee. “Then I will believe you and you will restore your independence. “Otherwise, so long as that committee exists and so long as the kids are up in cell in Wewak, police has become a private security guard for one man,” a concerned Kua told reporters
