Sweep Chairman Says Tiensten’s Sentencing, A Victory
CHAIRMAN of the Investigation Taskforce Sweep, Sam Koim, says Paul Tiensten’s sentencing today, is a victory for Papua New Guinea. This was the first investigation that the Sweep team conducted, when it was established in August 2011. Koim says justice has finally been served, and they are satisfied. He said a special note from this decision, is that Mr Tiensten is going to jail for making a footnote on a project proposal that compelled officers to bypass the lawful process. “Though it took time before the final verdict on sentencing, justice has finally been served, and we are satisfied. “We respect the independence of the judiciary in disposing of cases at its own pace, and in this instance, we applaud the decision,” Mr Koim said in a statement this afternoon. He also gave an update, on other cases that ITFS is working on. “We have about 77 cases currently going through the court process, 34 of which have passed the committal stage, and are lined up for trial this year. There were a couple of struck outs, which we have referred to the Public Prosecutor for possible filing of ex-officio indictments. “We have not had any acquittals yet, and this case has set the precedent. When the institutions of government realign themselves to extirpate corruption, corruption will have no place in our government,” Mr Koim said. PNG Facts/EMTV Comments are closed.
