In a small but significant ceremony held at the Sirinumu Development Company compound 17 mile Sogeri last Friday by the Koiari Resource Owners from impacted areas of Sirinumu Dam, Idutu, Rouna 1-4 and Laloki catchment area, Koiari landowners thanked the Government after receiving K20 million which they said would empower their lives.
Rouna Integrated Land Group (ILG) chairman Babea Toina said it was the first time that the government had made such a payment to resource owners. “After 16 years of waiting for such a major funding, we will now be able to set a foundation for the benefit of our children,” Toina stated. Koiari women’s spokesperson Lisa Favave says the lost decades where mothers carry water from rivers to their house will be over. “We will now plan for better water supply, roads and other services that will come to the resource Land owners once we start the land mobilization exercise,” MrsFavave said. furthermore, Sports & recreation representative and landowner spokesman from Sogeri, Tamati Minama stated that the money will not be shared among the landowners or resource owners but go straight towards sustainable development projects.
