Police shot dead a three-point-six metre long crocodile, at Siloura river near Kerema at the weekend, after it ripped off the head of an 11-year-old boy and swallowed his body.
The victim was fishing in the river with his parents last Thursday evening, when the tragedy happened. The parents, after realizing that their son was missing, immediately alerted the people and a search was conducted with police assistance. According to reports, the crocodile could not sink into the river because its stomach could not contain the body of the victim. The body, including the head are now placed in the mortuary at the hospital in Kerema. People from Kerema town and surrounding villages flocked down to Siloura beach to catch a glimpse of the killer crocodile. It was then later taken up to the hospital where it was cut open and the body of the victim retrieved. It was witnessed by the director for medical services at Kerema general hospital Dr.John Opa. Meantime, the Provincial Police Commander chief inspector Lincoln Gerari has appealed to the people living at Murua, Siloura and surrounding villages including Opau to take extra care and to be always on alert when they are out fishing cause the river systems are now infested with crocodiles.
