Madang Governor Jim Kas says, he will not re-consider the dumping of the Ramu Nickel mine's tailings into the ocean, using the deep sea tailing placement system.
He made the comments, when signing the reviewed Memorandum of Agreement on the Ramu Nickel project. Whilst commending Ramu Nickel for boosting Madang Province, in terms of economic development, he strongly urged the company management, through its president, to rethink the Deep Sea Tailing Placement. Mr Kas challenged the company to commission a more independent study into its tailing system to assure the people in the impact communities that it is safe. He suggested such findings should be made available to all interested parties. The Company President, Zao Zeming said the Ramu Nickel Project is a symbol of friendship between China and Papua New Guinea. This friendship has reflected well in the socio- economic developments in the impact areas. The Company to date has spent several millions of kina in infrastructure developments both in the Usino/ Bundi and Raikos districts, the hosts of the project. Mr Zao also assured Mr Kas and the people of Madang that the company will try as much as possible to go by the law and to review the Deep Sea Tailing Placement System. Comments are closed.
