The 80 thousand people of Kandep in the Enga Province will not be celebrating the country's 40th Independence Anniversary celebrations on the 16th of this month.
Opposition Leader and Kandep MP Don Polye said, his people have decided to join the people of Goilala in the Central Province, as well as other Districts in the country by not celebrating this year's celebrations. He said his Kandep District, is the worst affected by frost, and this is now further worsened, following the prolonged drought experienced around the country, that is why they will be pooling together all their resources to buy relief supplies. Mr. Polye also added that he has already established a bi-partisan committee which is being headed by the churches in the District, in a bid to raise funds to provide relief supplies to his people, so they too can celebrate the 40th Independence celebrations. He also reiterated that his people have yet to receive or see any of the proposed relief monies the National Government has allocated, apart from his own funding of 2 million kina.
