A RECORD K1.2 million cash was stolen from an airline terminal at Jackson Airport by five armed men dressed in a security firm’s uniform yesterday morning as it was being transferred to a waiting aircraft. Police said the money was for staff wages and operations for a private firm in Western Province,. Police said the theft was most probably an inside job because of the precise timing and the ease it had taken. They said the holdup has been linked to a gang which held up a man last Saturday and stole his vehicle a white XLT which was used as the gateway vehicle. Police reports reveal the money was taken from the company’s office to the terminal on Wednesday to be airlifted to Western Province. The money was then locked up in the airline’s safe overnight and while in the process of moving it yesterday, the well-attired five suspects swooped in on the workers holding them up, grabbed the consignment and made their getaway. Police said they were armed with semi-automatic pistols. They were alerted just after the suspects had taken off from the terminal. National Capital District metropolitan commander Superintendent Ben Turi and Airport police station commander Robert Wane are working together to establish how knowledge of the money transfer was known to the suspects and at that precise location. Both men are assisting in the investigations with the Boroko CID armed robbery squad using footage of the closed circuit television to determine the identity of the suspects.
